Webinar: Mobilizing for National Housing Strategy 2.0
April 15, 2026
Since it’s implementation in 2017, The National Housing Strategy (NHS) has failed to expand social housing supply for low-income renters. With the NHS set to expire in 2027, there is potential for a 56% drop in federal housing spending. All the while, housing precarity and homelessness continue to persist.
The SHHR coalition sees this expiration as an opportunity to get the federal government to commit to investing in a way that will actually improve housing in this country—backing social housing.
In April 2026, organizers from across the country gathered to learn about the current status of the NHS, if and how the new Build Canada Homes initiative will create social housing, and strategize around building a campaign to push for investment in social housing.
